Who we are
“We are the leaders we’ve been looking for.”
--Grace Lee Boggs IN-PRISON RACIAL JUSTICE READING GROUP
We meet weekly at CRCI on Wednesday evenings to discuss readings on a range of topics, including “Studies in Mass Incarceration,” “Policing and the Criminalization of Blackness,” and “Contemporary Social Movements.”
The mission of Liberation Literacy is to build social justice literacy in prisons in order to reimagine and re-articulate the relationship between incarceration, our community, and ourselves. |

Unexpected Value: My Testimony
By Paul H. Grice III
By Paul H. Grice III
Writing this testimony, I wasn’t so much confused about what to write, but what exactly you might want to know. You want to know my mistakes? My accomplishments? About my family or how I was raised? Honestly. would you truly know me if you read words on a screen? I don’t think so.
But the reason that I was interested in Liberation Literacy was on the basis of wanting to make the most of my time incarcerated and fill my schedule. What I got in return was something totally unexpected. Not only have I learned about Hegel’s “master-slave dialectic” and who Flo Kennedy was, but also what role I can play in making this community a better place. I don’t think you could understand unless you yourself were incarcerated, what it means for someone from our community, who doesn’t know you, doesn’t judge you because of what a paper says you are, but sees that you have value. That’s what this movement means to me: seeing value in those forgotten about and being willing to stand together to create a better community for all of us. |
This is the best way I can explain it. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you come check us out, I will be waiting with a smile and a lot of questions (HAHA). If you don’t, or can’t, come to see what we are about, I will continue to pray for your success, and if there is anything I can do to help you accomplish your goals, contact us and let me know how.
Peace and prosperity,
Paul
